Order Laboratory Tests—Clinical Labs

Complete the form

To select common lab tests:

Double-click an item on the list at the left.

You can also click to select an item, then click Add > (ALT+A).

You must select items one at a time.

To clear a test from the selected tests list, click its line, then click Remove (ALT+R).

Complete additional information when prompted

The column on the left lists which parameters are requested. Red = required; black = optional.

Click the appropriate options (one choice only) and/or checkboxes (one or more allowed), or type the requested information to answer questions as prompted. The selection of one item may trigger a prompt for additional information.
Click the next item in the list on the left, and answer as prompted.
Repeat with all required or relevant items in the list.
If other tests are usually ordered with the current selection, they are listed to the right. Click to check any tests to add to the order.
Click OK (ALT+O).

To reopen the additional information form for a test (flagged with MORE), click its line, then click Modify Additional Info (ALT+M).

If needed, look up test(s) that do not appear on the common labs list

Type all or part of the test, panel, or specimen name in the field to the left of Search.

You must type at least 2 characters.
Partial names (chol), symbols (na) and acronyms (hdl)are all acceptable.
You cannot string search terms together, with commas separating them. You can only look up labs one at a time.

Click Search (or press ENTER).

If your search term returns more than 35 tests, a message displays with suggestions for narrowing the list. Click OK (ALT+O) to acknowledge.
If your search term does not return any tests, a message displays with suggestions for getting results. Click OK (ALT+O) to acknowledge.

To select the test(s) you want, double-click an item on the list at the left—or click, then click Add > (ALT+A). You must select items one at a time.

There is no "take as typed" option. Use the Other labs function if you cannot find a test.

Repeat the preceding steps until all of the tests you need are listed as Selected Tests.
Click OK (ALT+O).

To clear a test from the selected tests list, click its line, then click Remove (ALT+R).
To reopen the additional information form for a test (flagged with MORE), click its line, then click Modify Additional Info (ALT+M).

Set the collection type—Routine or STAT; Already Collected, Fasting

The default collection time is Routine. Click STAT to order a short turnaround time collection by the clinician or STAT processing by the lab.

SuperSTAT specimens should be delivered via the appropriate pneumatic tube. Label appropriately.

Stat collections are limited to x1 frequency and 1 total. Start time defaults to Now; options are limited to Now, In PACU, Specific Date/Time, and Other.

If the specimen is in hand, click the already collected checkbox.

Already collected orders are limited to x1 frequency, 1 total, and the start time Now.

Click fasting if required for any of the selected tests.

If the need for testing depends on a specific condition, click Draw if/when

Type a description of the condition(s) for collecting the specimen for testing.
Click x1 for a single collection, or until discontinued to monitor the condition until the order is discontinued.
Click OK (ALT+O).

Draw if/when orders are limited to x1 frequency, 1 total, and the start time Now.

Select a frequency if needed.

STAT, draw if / when, and already collected specimens are limited to x1 (one time) frequency.
For Daily, read the order warning. To select a different frequency, click Cancel (ALT+C). To order the daily collections, click OK/Continue (ALT+O). The prompt for total number of collections is automatic (see next).
For Other, type a number, then select Hours, Minutes, or Days.
If you enter 7 Days for the Other option, the Start list options include each day of the week, at 7 AM, or a free-text entry.

If more than one collection is needed, select from the Total Collections list

STAT, draw if/when, and already collected specimens are limited to x1 (one time) collections. You must select a total greater than 1 for orders with other than x1 frequency to set the duration of the order.
Daily frequency prompts automatically for the number of collections.

For Daily frequency, or Total Collections of Other, when prompted, select an option from the total number list. For multiple collections per day, note the guidelines for calculating the total number of collections per day from the frequency.
Click to check one or more reasons for the prolonged collection. For Other, type a description.
Click OK (ALT+O).

Select an option from the Start list

In AM orders written after 7 a.m. and before midnight are dated for tomorrow. In AM orders written after midnight and before 7 a.m. are dated for today.

For weekly orders (Q 7 days frequency), click to select the day of the week, or select Other and type a description
For Before or After, type a description of the event. Note that if both before and after are needed—for example, around a medication administration—two lab orders are needed.
For Post Op day #, select the day from the list.
For Specific date/Time: Click the date drop-down list to select from a calendar; you can also type the date and time, or click the arrows to increment/decrement a selected number.
For Other, type a description.

For labs collected for research or occupational health, click Special Billing

Click either the protocol or occupational health option.
For research protocols, type at least the name of the study. If known, type the names of the principal investigator and/or study coordinator. Type the Peoplesoft special billing number if available.
Click OK (ALT+O).

Write additional orders as needed, then sign the session.
