December 19, 2012—Prompt to Order Nicotine Replacement Therapy for Smokers
When nursing orders for health habits indicate that the selected patient has smoked cigarettes within the last year, providers writing orders are prompted to consider options for nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
Key features:
MDs, NPs, PAs, and CNMs are prompted to consider NRT for patient with a recent history of tobacco smoking
The prompt includes a link to information on managing hospitalized tobacco users, from the MGH Tobacco Treatment Service (TTS)
Providers can defer the decision; the prompt reappears for every provider writing orders for the patient, until the question is answered
Order options include different doses of nicotine patches; on selection, the medication order is completed and added to the session automatically
Providers can decline NRT if appropriate, and the prompt will no longer occur
Providers have the option to order PRN nicotine lozenges from the prompt, whether deferring, declining, or ordering NRT
