POE Queue: The Provider Order Entry Queue system—POE Queue—allows diagnostic and therapy services at MGH to view and process records without printing, faxing, or phoning. The system functions independently from Order Entry, so that users on the service side are not required to have Order Entry authorization to use the POE Queue.
What is a queue? Queues list current records for the specific service or department for which they are built. Both the contents and the processing functions of any given queue can be set by the department queue administrator. There is a great deal of flexibility as to the contents of a queue, including what parameters of the orders will display and how the list can be organized and limited. In addition, administrators set processing, viewing, and printing functions.
Access to queues: Users must be authorized to work with POE Queues. Users can have either view only access, or full access to process records as well as view the list. Each queue has a specified list of users, which can be updated as necessary (see Administrating Queues, below).
Administrating Queues: Users with Administrator access to a POE Queue are authorized to add users to a queue and set their access level, remove users, and send emails to all or one user. Administrators have access to Queue Authorizations for this purpose. Business owners of a queue are automatically given administrator access to the queue.
Processing records using the POE Queue: Orders in a departmental queue can be processed to indicate that they have been received. It is possible to correct the error if an record is processed as received by mistake. When an record is processed, the name of the user who processed the record is recorded in the order detail in Order Entry, along with the date and time.
New, Discontinued, and Changed Orders: New records are added to the queue automatically at timed intervals, in a process called Refresh. The queue can be refreshed manually as well. New records that have not been processed as received will drop off the list if they are discontinued by the clinician or by the discharge process. If an record that has not been received is changed, the original record does not display in the queue, and the change record is listed as New.
If an record that has been processed as received is changed or discontinued, it remains on the list as Received. The Change or Cancel (discontinue) record is linked in the queue to the received record, displaying just above. Change and Cancel records can be processed as received, like new records.
Queue Builder and Queue Authorizations tool: You must be authorized by a POE administrator to access either the Queue Builder or the Queue Authorizations queue. Users with administrator access to a departmental queue have access to Queue Authorizations for that departmental queue only. If you have access to the Queue Authorizations queue, it will be appear in your Queue Authorizations list of queues. Likewise, the Queue Builder is listed as a queue if you are an authorized user. Users all have the same access level in the builder and authorization '"queues."
