Consequent orders for access line maintenance:
If you ordered a midline, PICC, implanted port, or tunneled catheter with flush per protocol, the consequent order for heparin to be used in the flush is presented. Click Yes to add this order to your session. If you choose No, or if you don't order heparin because of an allergy alert, order a saline lock to flush the line.
If you ordered a flush with any other line but the first four (as noted above), you must order heparin separately if needed. To do so, close the General Care orders scratch pad, click Medications on the session scratch pad, search for HEPARIN, and select HEPARIN FLUSH IV from the search results. See Ordering Medications.
An order for a saline lock automatically generates two (2) consequent medication orders on completion. See Overview of Consequent Orders.
Write additional orders as needed, then sign the session.
A saline lock and its associated flush orders expire after 96 hours per MGH policy.
