Order General Care—Urinary Catheter

• The default options and settings are determined by age group. To remove the override of the age group for a neonate, see Changing a Neonate Age For Orders.

• All MDs, NPs, PAs, and CNMs are reminded to assess the need to continue the order when writing additional orders. The timing for the reminder depends on the primary indication for ordering the catheter. If the order is continued, you are prompted to review the indications and type of catheter, and update the order as needed.

• If you haven't already:

1. Select the patient.

2. Click Write (ALT+W).

3. Click General Care (ALT+G).

4. Click Urinary Catheter (ALT+Y).

• Complete the order:

1. Click a checkbox (or press ALT + the underlined letter) to select one or more of the urinary catheter options.

2. For urinary catheter to gravity, when prompted:

• Click to select the primary indication.

• Click to select the option that best describes the need. For Monitoring of urinary output in critically ill patients, click to select the detailed reason.

• Click OK (ALT+O).

3. Complete the order as follows for the selections:

• Urinary Catheter to Gravity (ALT+G): Click one or more to select Coude, Mallincotte, or 3-Way. If Other, type a description. Type instructions if needed.

• Irrigate Urinary Catheter (ALT+I): Click Continuous or Intermittent. Type the irrigation fluid in the Solution field and the flow in the Rate field. (The Rate increase/decrease arrows change the value to the nearest 10 cc/hr, in increments of 10.) If needed, click the Until Clear checkbox. Type instructions if needed.

• Self-Catheter (ALT+E): Select the frequency from the Freq drop-down list. If Other, type the frequency in the field provided. Type instructions if needed.

• Straight Catheter (ALT+S): Select the frequency from the Freq drop-down list. If Other, type the frequency in the field provided. Type instructions if needed.

• Suprapubic Catheter (ALT+U): Type instructions if needed.

• D/C Urinary Catheter (ALT+D): Select Now, AM, or Other from the Time drop-down list. Type instructions if needed.

4. Select a Start Time (Now or Other ) for any order except D/C Urinary Catheter.

5. Click OK (ALT+O).

• Depending on the order, you may be prompted to include other orders. See Overview of Consequent Orders.

• Write additional orders as needed, then sign the session.
