January 15, 2013—Documenting the Application of Mechanical Antiembolism Measures (VTE Prophylaxis)
For patients on designated care units with orders for antiembolism measures, providers can document the application of the treatment when signing any routine order session. This fulfills a measure for meaningful use of the EHR (electronic health record) as defined by the Joint Commission.
Some care units, such as fetal/maternal medicine and psychiatrics, are exempt from this requirement.
Key features:
The checkbox to verify application of antiembolism measures is presented alongside the field for the provider's clinical key on signing a routine order session
The option displays only if the patient has an antiembolism order (TED stockings or pneumatic boots)
Providers should check the box if they have seen the treatment applied or verified the application with the patient's nurse
When the box is checked, the date and time displays. If known, providers can change this time stamp to the date and time the treatment was applied.
Checking the box generates a general care order with the statement "VTE mechanical prophylaxis was applied" followed by the date and time stamp. The name of the provider is included in the detail of the order.
