What's New for MGH Inpatient Order Entry?

Urinary Catheter Indications, Assessment Reminder & Reasons for Deferring—Providers ordering an indwelling urinary catheter are now required to select an indication for catheterization. Also, the description of the order has been changed from the trademark "Foley" to the generic urinary catheter.

When a selected patient has an active order for a urinary catheter, all MDs, NPs, PAs, and CNMs are reminded to assess the need to continue the order when writing additional orders. The timing for the reminder depends on the primary indication for ordering the catheter. Providers can defer the decision if needed, but who are the responding/responsible clinician are required to give a reason for deferring.
