Overview of Building a Protocol

The object of building the protocol in the Chemotherapy Builder is to clearly define the variations in treatment that are required by the study. Order sets are still the bulk of the content, but in addition you must include folders that designate branch points where treatments diverge, organizing the flow. By creating folders for each of the cycles and branch points at each randomization, you designate the steps and structure of the protocol. When the physician orders a protocol in Order Entry, the system follows the flow to the folder that was opened last, then opens the next one in the flow to let the physician know what the next step is.

It is helpful to create a flow chart or outline on paper before you start to build a protocol. The key is determining where to put the randomization folders. You want the order player to present the physician with one course of treatment only, rather than all of the variations within the study. To do this you must put each variation as a sub-folder inside a randomization folder.
