Request a PICC Line Consult

• If you haven't already, start the consult order.

1. Select the patient.

2. Click Write (ALT+W).

3. Click Consults (ALT+C).

4. Click Add (ALT+A).

5. Select IV Team - PICC from the service drop-down list.

• When writing a new order, you will be prompted to complete the referral information automatically.

• To edit an existing order, click the button to the right of the service field.

• Complete the referral information:

1. Click to select one or more reasons for the line placement from the rationale list. (Click again to deselect). Scroll to view the entire list. For Other, type a description when prompted, then click OK (ALT+O).

2. Click to select a duration from the list of anticipated lengths of time. For Other, type a description when prompted, then click OK (ALT+O).

3. Click to select one or more options from the access considerations list. (Click again to deselect). For Other, type a description when prompted, then click OK (ALT+O).

4. When prompted by the selection of any access consideration except None and Other, click to indicate the location—left side, right side, or both. Click OK (ALT+O) to continue.

The location is appended to the Access Consideration selection. To change this information, double-click the item and select again.

5. Select the anticipated date of discharge (This AM, Today, Tomorrow, Date Unknown at This Time, or Other). For Other, type a description when prompted, then click OK (ALT+O).

The instruction to refer to Interventional Radiology if IV Nurse unable to insert PICC is required, and added automatically to the order when signed.

6. Click OK (ALT+O).

• Complete the Consult form

7. Select a time (Now, Today, Tomorrow, or Other).

8. The anticipated date of discharge is carried over from the referral page.

9. Click OK (ALT+O).

10. When prompted for the consequent order to confirm line placement, click to select an option, then click OK (ALT+O).

The radiology order for a plain film is completed automatically and added to the orders for the session.

• Write additional orders as needed, then sign the session.

The IV Team is paged when the order is signed.
