August 4, 2015—Duration alert for restricted antibiotics
The MGH infectious Disease Service, in conjunction with Pharmacy Services, is monitoring the use of certain antibiotics. If these antibiotics are ordered without a defined duration, and are not discontinued after 48 hours, providers writing new routine or special orders are prompted to determine whether the order should be continued. Options include:
Continuing the treatment by editing the order to specify a limited duration, in consultation with Infectious Disease Services.
Discontinuing the treatment and ordering an alternative
Discontinuing the treatment (writing a discontinue order)
Defer the decision to the proper provider when writing new orders as a consultant
