Restricted Antibiotics

 

The MGH infectious Disease Service, in conjunction with Pharmacy Services, is monitoring the use of certain antibiotics. If these antibiotics are ordered without a defined duration, and are not discontinued after 48 hours, providers writing new routine or special orders are prompted to determine whether the order should be continued.

  1. Click Continue and Specify Duration (ALT+C).

  2. When the medication order form opens, type to set either the number of doses or the number of days to continue the treatment.

  3. If needed, the ID Approval field displays. Look up the name of the Infectious Disease specialist who approved the continued administration:

  1. In the ID Approval field, type at least one letter of the last name. To include more information, follow this with a comma (,), and one or more letters from the first name (no spaces).

  2. Click Search Approval. The Providers list opens, displaying any names that matched your input.

  3. Click to select a name.

  4. Click OK.

  1. Click Discontinue and Order Alternative (ALT+A).

  2. The medication order form opens. Write an order for the alternative treatment. See Ordering Medications.

  3. The discontinue order for the current antibiotic and the new order are listed in the session scratch pad. Sign the session.

  1. Click Discontinue (ALT+D).

  2. When prompted, type your signing key, then click OK (ALT+O).
