November 30, 2010—Important changes to Restraint and Seclusion Orders
Starting on November 30th, orders for restraint have been enhanced to ensure that the assessment of the need for restraint is documented to comply with the Code of Federal Regulations Conditions of Participation for Hospitals.
Key features:
The general reason for the restraint (behavioral or non-behavioral) must be selected first, before the restraint can be selected.
Orders include the initial individualized patient assessment.
For non-behavioral (medical/surgical) restraints, providers are prompted daily to print and complete the assessment template. Completed daily assessments must be placed in the patient’s chart along with the daily progress note.
Non-behavioral restraints no longer expire automatically. The order must be manually discontinued for patients who no longer need non-behavioral restraints.
