Click the lock button so it is down: 
(Locked = items don't move)
Click the Screen menu, then click the Drag On/Off option so it is NOT checked: Drag On/Off
Press F2.
When you click an item with dragging OFF, the item is highlighted in deep gray.
To turn off dragging so that clicking an item selects it:
