Ordering or Declining the Vaccination: To better comply with accreditation requirements, providers are automatically prompted to review the vaccination status of all patients over the age of 65 for pneumococcus. The prompt does not occur if the patient has a record of pneumococcal vaccination in MGH discharge orders or the LCS Immunization Service, which documents vaccinations activities in the LMR and On Call ambulatory records. Timing for the first prompt depends on the patient’s time of admission, and is designed to allow time to determine if the vaccination is needed. MDs, NPs, and PAs have six (6) hours after the first time the prompt appears to either order the vaccination on such patients, or provide a reason not to do so. After six hours, these providers cannot write orders on these patients until the question of whether to vaccinate is resolved.
