Some orders do not fall into any of the specific types defined in Order Entry. Some patient education, for example, isn't covered; another category is diagnosis-related instructions to caregivers. When a provider orders "free-style" from one of the system forms, there is usually a field for instructions. The ordering provider types whatever instructions apply. For example, if a patient has had a left mastectomy with nodes removed, the instructions might read "No BP from left arm."
It's possible to write these specific instructions into the template order for vital signs, but the ordering provider would have to reopen the form to edit the instructions as needed. A better way to prompt the ordering provider to include such instructions when needed, while making it simple to be specific, is to set up a custom general care other order:
