ED to Admit orders can be written only for patients located in an Emergency Department treatment area, who have orders flagged as <ED order only>. See also Overview of ED to Admit Orders.
If no ED to Admit session exists, providers writing inpatient orders for patients with active ED orders are prompted to create one. When written from an inpatient unit, ED to Admit orders are active immediately on signing, and all ED orders are re-ordered or discontinued as indicated.
ED to Admit orders written from the ED treatment areas are set to await activation once the patient arrives in the inpatient care unit. See Activating Orders.
From the ED, if you haven't already:
Click Special Orders (ALT+I).
Click Ed to Admit (ALT+E).
Click New (ALT+N).
For each item on the active list, click the corresponding checkbox to choose whether to Re-Order or Discontinue the order.
You must click a checkbox to indicate whether to Re-Order or Discontinue these order types: Medications, IV, Respiratory, Blood Products, Labs, Foods and Nutrition, Restraints/Code Status, and General Care orders for wound care, precautions, diagnosis, vascular access devices, and anti-embolism.
Current ED orders that are expected to be carried out before transfer are displayed as view only. These include Radiology, Consults, Vital Signs, Diagnostic Studies, one-time (X1) medications, and General Care orders except wound care, precautions, diagnosis, vascular access devices, and anti-embolism.
Each order that is selected for the admission is checked automatically to determine if the ED parameters translate exactly to those available for inpatients. If needed, the inpatient form opens for you to complete the order for inpatient care. Complete the order and click OK to return to the current ED orders list. These orders are flagged as <updated to>admit order<from>ED order. See Overview of Order Types for links to instructions for different order types.
For patients on ED suicide precautions, you are prompted to order inpatient suicide precautions from the inpatient order template. Click OK to open the template and complete the order. See Ordering From a Template.
