October 15, 2014—Change to Orders for NPO After Midnight

• The default expiration of NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight is now 20 hours after the order starts (that is 8 p.m. ). The duration can be edited as needed.

• The option to except medications now includes "with sips of water ONLY."

• For NPO for Procedure orders, if you select the option to prevent the order from expiring automatically, you are reminded that you must ask the responding clinician to discontinue the NPO order and write a food and nutrition order at the appropriate time.
