September 25, 2012—Pending Labs and Reports in DEx Items for Follow-Up
MGH DEx (Discharge Express) has been enhanced to require providers to indicate whether there are any results or reports still pending completion or clinical review. The section for Items for Follow-Up/Annotations includes this question: "To your knowledge, does the patient have pending labs or studies that will require follow-up?" When the question is answered Yes, the Discharge Summary printout includes information on obtaining results from Health Information Services.
Numeric pending lab tests are listed automatically in the Items For Follow-Up/Annotations section, and Yes is the answer is selected by default.
If no pending labs have been listed automatically, and you do not know of any pending studies or reports, you can select No to answer.
If you do know that there are results or reports awaiting completion or review:
Click the Yes option in the Provider Note section.
Annotate any relevant labs or studies in the Recent Labs section to include them in the list of Items for Follow-Up/Annotation (see instructions above).
Click the link to open the section for Most Recent Labs and Other Studies.
Click the icon to the right of a lab result or report date to open the text entry field for that specific item.
Type information for follow-up, then click Save.
The result or report name and date are stored with your input in the section below, Items for Follow-Up/Annotations.
For other tests or studies, type a description in the field for Other Items Requiring Follow-Up.
Procedure: See Discharge Summaries in DEx > Editing Specific Information > Items for Follow-Up / Annotation
