February 14, 2011: Ordering for Patients on Low Glycemic Index Treatments or Ketogenic Diets

Interventions are in place to alert providers when the selected patient is following carbohydrate restrictions due to a ketogenic diet or low-glycemic index treatment (LGIT). When writing orders for medications, IV fluids, parenteral nutrition (TPN or PPN), food and nutrition, there is the potential to harm the patient by  violating the extreme carbohydrate restriction. Providers are alerted whenever they start to write these types of orders for patients whose record includes

On signing any orders for medications, IV fluids, parenteral nutrition (TPN or PPN), or  food and nutrition for a patient who is following carbohydrate restrictions, you will be prompted to attest that all of the orders are appropriate for the patient following a ketogenic diet or low glycemic index treatment (LGIT).
