What's New with Order Entry and eMAR at MGH?

January 25, 2011—Reason for ordering patient's own medications

When ordering a medication for inpatients, providers can indicate that the patient will take it from a personal supply brought in from outside the hospital. When the provider selects this Patient Own Medication <POM> option, and the drug is available from the hospital formulary, the provider is prompted to provide the reason for administering from the patient's own supply.

Allowing patients to take medications brought from outside of MGH bypasses all bar code based safety checking, which is used by the MGH electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR). You may be contacted by a pharmacist to re-order the medication if it is available from MGH formulary.
