Fingerstick Documentation - eMAR - July 13 2010
Starting on July 13, the results for all bedside point-of-care blood glucose monitoring and clinical lab glucose testing should be recorded on the patient's eMAR. This documentation centralizes the documentation, and is intended to eliminate the use of the green paper "diabetic sheets."
Key features:
As before, when administering sliding scale insulin, the RN is prompted to document the patient's current blood glucose level
The RN can document blood glucose levels independent of medication administration by using the Fingerstick function on the patient's To Do List
The Fingerstick function is available regardless of whether the patient has an order for insulin or other glucose
If the blood glucose level is documented any time within 60 minutes before insulin administration, the result is automatically associated with the order for the shortest acting insulin
The patient's Fingerstick History of documented blood glucose levels is available from the Administration History
The Fingerstick History also includes all records of administration of Dextrose 25%, Dextrose 50%, and Glucagon
OAs do not need to place green diabetic sheet in green book
PCAs document bedside glucose testing results on flow sheet
All blood glucose levels (bedside fingerstick and clinical laboratory) are documented by the RN in the eMAR
RN will not need to double document insulin administration on green diabetic sheet
